Explore the world of bridesmaid fashion with Grace Lee, Founder of Birdy Grey

The creative mastermind behind Birdy Grey, Grace Lee started her journey in the more traditional manner of corporate fashion and beauty before launching the  uber chic yet affordable label Bird Grey in 2017. After six separate occasions of being a bridesmaid and six monochromatic colored dresses, she became an expert in the market. We sat down with Grace to discuss the bustling wedding industry and how she's doing things a bit different.

Welcome Grace! How has your 2022 been going?

So far, so good! It’s been pretty intense with the return of weddings this year, but the business is growing and I’m excited to see what 2022 has in store.

What’s something you learned about yourselves in the last year?

I’ve always fancied myself to be a city girl (I lived in NY for 10 years, and LA for 10) but I recently bought a house in the suburbs… and I absolutely LOVE everything about living in the burbs

Your company Birdy Grey is a direct-to-customer dress brand that specializes in dazzling apparel options and gifts for wedding party members. Can you talk to us more about that?

Birdy Grey is a DTC bridal startup that I launched in 2017. All of our bridesmaid dresses are $99, and curated for easy mix & match between colors and silhouettes. We also offer fun gifts (in fact we just launched our Monogram Shop!), accessories, such as shoes and jewelry, and bachelorette party swag.

What attracted you to creating Birdy Grey originally?

Having been a bridesmaid 6 times myself, I realized that the bridesmaid dress shopping experience was long overdue for change–dresses were expensive and made-to-order (meaning, long lead times and inflexible return policies) and it was still a highly brick-and-mortar experience. With Birdy Grey, I sought to change change that by offering beautiful and affordable bridesmaid dresses online.

You now offer a recycling program for the dresses after the celebration draws to a close. Could you tell us more about that? Les Belles also offers an upcycling program and we are big on closing the loop for the hosiery industry.

Social impact is really important to me.  Since day one, we’ve partnered with The Princess Project to help facilitate customer dress donations after the wedding to benefit teens in need for prom.

What’s a project you’re most proud of?

Starting a company and scaling it to where it is today is my greatest achievement. I’m a creative at heart, so watching my ideas brought to life, from concept to launch, with every product, collection or campaign is truly rewarding.

Where do you find inspiration?

I find a lot of inspiration on social media–Instagram, Pinterest and Youtube.

What’s one thing you would tell a 21-year old Grace?

“Everything will work out the way it’s supposed to in the end, so go out there and live your best life–buy the bag, go on the trip, kiss the boy, have another cocktail.”

When do you feel most beautiful?

I feel the most beautiful when self-care is prioritized… when I’m drinking a lot of water, being diligent with my skincare and getting enough sleep.
